A Message From The Principal

Mrs Claire Allen

Happy holidays everyone! Our staff wish all families a restful and joyous Easter weekend and holiday period. Our school will be joining with all other public schools across NSW on Monday 24 April 2023 to carry out professional learning focused on Aboriginal education. School development days are used by schools to build on the knowledge and skills of our teachers, school leaders and school administrative support staff through a targeted professional learning program.

The professional learning has been planned around the unique needs of our school community and will help to sustain positive change and improve both educational outcomes and wellbeing for all learners. I want to thank you for your ongoing support as we work to improve outcomes for all students and increase knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal histories and cultures.

Term 2 - Happy hoildays

We would like to thank our school community for the support they have provided to students and staff over the last term. It has been a strong start to the school year for Narrabri Public School and we have seen some incredible opportunities for our students throughout Term 1. Our school prides itself on being innovative and diverse in the way we meet our individual students needs and we recognise that one size does not fit all. We also strive to create a safe and nurturing learning environment where concerns are addressed promptly and fairly and the foundations of our core values: Respect, Responsibility, Resilience, Achievement and Inclusion are consistently adhered to. This has been achieved through the implementation of our school-wide Berry Street Education Model, as well as the high potential gifted education programs, wellbeing initiatives, extra-curricular opportunities and sporting ventures.

To date, 135 students K-6 have received learning enrichment or support for literacy and numeracy that is delivered through small targeted groups or one on one learning experiences. 41 Students have received High Potential Gifted Education instruction and experiences in the areas of Creativity and Social/Emotional Development (public speaking skills). 48 students have represented Narrabri Public School at individual and team sporting competitions. 12 students have participated in our speech and language program. This is just to name a few ways in which we foster the strengths and grow the skills of every child in our community. We love finding new and innovative ways to meet our students needs and provide opportunities that give voice to all stakeholders including students, staff and family members. Thank you again to our entire community and we wish you a safe and happy holidays.

ANZAC Ceremony

This morning our school community hosted a moving service in commemoration of ANZAC Day. On the year of the 50th anniversary of an end to Australian participation in the Vietnam War, we were privileged to have Mr Richard Barry OAM share his experiences with our students during the assembly.

Our service included performances by the choir and band members, in addition to a moving poem delivered by Reuben Weekes. We welcome and encourage our students to join with us for the annual March on ANZAC Day, meeting staff at NPS at 10am on Tuesday 25th April.

Easter Raffle

Our annual Easter Raffle was a hit! Students and their families went above and beyond to create an atmosphere of festive joy. Thank you to the incredible team of parents that gave their own time to package up the generous donations provided by our school community for the raffle prizes.

An incredible amount of raffle tickets were sold over the last few weeks and the P & C is looking forward to sharing the success of this fundraising initiative once the total has been calculated. We can only hope that all that chocolate successfully made it home at the end of the day!

6G Primary Assembly

This week's star studded primary assembly was hosted by 6G.

Our first presentation to the audience was our 'Bridge to Terabithia' PowerPoint. We used watercolours to create our own version of Terabithia and described our paintings with a short descriptive sentence based on language from the novel.

For the main event we referenced our Term 1 Music knowledge of musical terms, history of music and singing. We demonstrated our talents for you - Just a note if there were any talent scouts out there, we hope you had your notebooks and pens out!!!

Attendance BBQ

On Wednesday 5th April, our Wellbeing Attendance Monitoring team, comprising of Mrs Lindy White and Mrs Pattie Lettice, with the support of Mr Wayne Wall, cooked up a storm on the BBQ, filling our school with the fragrant aroma that had all mouths watering. This BBQ lunch was in recognition of the outstanding efforts of all students and their families in improving and maintaining average class attendance above 90%. We understand that when students are sick or have unavoidable leave they may miss a day, however we don't count these justified and explained absences against the class total. Daily attendance is vital in ensuring that all students have the best educational opportunity to set them up for their future.

Hand lettering of thank you

Many thanks to Narrabri Woolworths & Watsons Kitchen for your donation of breakfast items to our Breakfast Club each week. This generous gesture is very much appreciated by our students. This donation allows us to offer breakfast three times a week.

Pre-School Visits!

During the last four weeks of Term 1 we have had local preschools visit NPS for a taste of 'Big School'. Our final session was held yesterday with wonderful little visitors from Nurruby Preschool. The children met our staff and school leaders and travelled with them by bus to Narrabri Public School. They enjoyed drawing, dancing, listening to a story and visiting the new pirate area play equipment. After a delicious fruit afternoon tea they were back on the bus, happily waving good bye to the teachers and school leaders. Thank you Nurruby for visiting us!

These afternoon visits have been a wonderful opportunity for the preschools in our town to come and see all that our school has to offer.

Transition Commences

Our kindergarten transition program commenced this week with the first of our pre-school visits. This important step assists future kindergarten students to experience big school with adults they know, fostering confidence that helps them to enjoy the experience.

We have 3 more Tuesday pre-school visits before the end of the term, and this week’s visitors were delighted to receive a medal to celebrate their time at NPS. There were many laughs and smiles as they explored our playground, ate delicious fruit, and participated in activities with our current kindergarten students.

Next term commences with a Meet and Greet afternoon tea on Tuesday 2nd May from 2-3pm; with the ready for kindergarten sessions from 2-3pm weekly from Tuesday, 9th May.

If you have a child, or have friends or family that have children commencing kindergarten in 2024, we would encourage them to contact the office on 6792 2246 to organise a Principal’s tour of the school and to attend the upcoming sessions. Even if you haven’t made a final decision about the best fit for your child, we would love to share the exciting and enriching opoprtunities that Narrabri Public School has to offer.

Heathly Hints

Like any medication, with head lice treatments it’s important to read the instructions to get the most out of your treatment. Head Lice have a life cycle that lasts up to 21 days, so it’s really important that parents treat a child's hair as directed to break the cycle and kill all lice and eggs effectively. Follow ALL the instructions on the pack. Head lice can be very frustrating, but this frustration can be compounded if the instructions aren’t followed carefully.

Nit Busters will be coming up in Week 4 Term 2

NITBUSTERS PROGRAM

The Nitbusters School Head Lice Project is a joint project between NSW Health, NSW Department of Education and Communities, Federation of School Councils and the Federation of P & C Associations. The project aims to educate schools, children and parents about head lice and how to treat them as a community and within the home.

In order for Nitbusters to be successful in our school, every child should be involved. It takes just one infested head to infest the whole class. One of the key messages of the project is that anyone and everyone can contract nits, regardless of your age, sex or background.

The project involves the entire school community working together to coordinate and run a Nitbusting Day on the school premises in an effort to treat the entire student body for head lice at one time.

The school’s parent body organises the day by providing helpers to screen and treat all children for head lice. The screening is done by parent/guardian volunteers on a class by class basis, with the youngest children treated early in the school day.

The project employs the use of the comb and conditioner method for treating the presence of head lice, which is a safe, non-chemical treatment, involving the mechanical removal of head lice through combing.

Each child is encouraged to participate and requires a signed Parent Consent Form before they can be screened. No child will participate without a signed consent form, nor be penalised in any way for not participating. Parents/guardians and/or children can withdraw from the screening at any time. Those children not participating, however, can learn how to identify and remove lice and eggs.

The Parent Consent Form is to be returned to school before the Nitbusting Day. A separate form must be filled out for each child.

Our school P & C will be running this program and we look forward to working with them and will keep parents informed and up to date with the latest information.
