A Message From

The Principal

Mrs Claire Allen

I hope all our families have some lovely plans for rest and relaxation, or adventure, over this coming long weekend. With only 20 school days left this term, it is a good opportunity to recharge the batteries. As I’m sure everyone has noticed, we have quickly dived into chilly winter days with a lot of illness making its way through town. To avoid illness it is important to make sure our students have appropriate warm dress at school, including long pants or tights/stockings, and jumpers or jackets.

We have a range of second-hand uniforms at school for those in need and appreciate any donations of quality pre-loved goods that can be used to support other families. Please make sure to have your child’s name in all their uniforms in case they are misplaced during a day. I would also encourage families to talk with their children about good hygiene practices including hand washing and nose blowing. Staff encourage these in all classrooms and we have a ready supply of soap, hand sanitiser and tissues! If your child is unwell, please contact the office promptly to explain their absence for our records

North West Science & Engineering Discovery Day

On Wednesday, May 5th, students from Stage 3 participated in the North West Region Science and Engineering Challenge, organised by the University of Newcastle. They collaborated in teams to tackle two engaging, hands-on practical activities each. These tasks required skills in planning, designing, constructing, and problem-solving. Some of the activities students had fun participating in included designing a windmill to generate the greatest amount of speed and power. They also had the challenge of building structures using the 3D printed rocks and sticks to catch specific types and amounts of fish as they swim along the river. Groups designed and built a balsa glider to travel a substantial distance.

Our students demonstrated perseverance and resilience when confronted with particularly challenging problems, some of which seemed impossible at first. Our school was commended by the coordinators for their exemplary conduct throughout. Congratulations to all the students involved; they made NPS proud!

Nitbusters

Thank you to all the students who participated in our Nitbusters Program - The Balonne Street Salon on Monday. Your involvement is greatly appreciated and plays a crucial role in the success of our program.

Since the program's inception in 2023, we have witnessed remarkable progress. There has been a 58% reduction in the number of students with active head lice, which is a significant achievement in improving the overall health and well-being of our school community. Additionally, we have seen a 42% increase in student participation, reflecting the growing awareness and commitment among our students to maintain a lice-free environment.

Cyberbully Performance

Today years 3-6 attend a school funded performance about Cyberbullying. The performance was an entertaining play that explores the serious issue of cyber bullying among young people. The play looks at the misuse of texting, social networking sites and unauthorized use of pictures and footage. Following the play, a debriefing session provided students with the opportunity to discuss important issues highlighted during the performance and to address the real-life impacts of cyberbullying.

Compulsory School Attendance

Education for your child is important and regular attendance at school is essential for your child to achieve their educational best and increase their career and life options. NSW public schools work in partnership with parents to encourage and support regular attendance of children and young people. When your child attends school every day, learning becomes easier and your child will build and maintain friendships with other children.

Education in NSW is compulsory for children between the ages of 6 years and below the minimum school leaving age of 17 years. Once enrolled, children are required to attend school each day it is open for students.

Arriving at school and class on time:

  • Ensures that students do not miss out on important learning activities scheduled early in the day
  • Helps students learn the importance of punctuality and routine
  • Give students time to greet their friends before class
  • Reduces classroom disruption

Lateness is recorded as a partial absence and must be explained by parents.

On occasion, your child may need to absent from school.

On occasion, your child may need to absent from school. Justified reasons for student absences may include:

  • being sick, or having an infectious disease
  • having an unavoidable medical appointment
  • being required to attend a recognised religious holiday
  • exceptional or urgent family circumstances (eg: attending a funeral).

A verbal or written explanation for an absences must be provided to the school within 7 days of the absence. However, if the school has not received an explanation within 2 days, you may be contacted to discuss the absence.

If you are planning a holiday during the school term, you should discuss this with the Principal, Mrs Claire Allen. An Application for Extended Leave may need to be completed. Absences related to travel will be marked as leave on the roll and will contribute to your chld’s total absences for the year.

If you have any questions in relation to submitting absence information, please contact the office on 02 6792 2246.

In education

The best education happens when parents and schools work together. Working together as partners is fundamental to maintaining positive student behaviour in schools. To support this collaboration, our weekly digital newsletter will include the "What Parents and Carers Need to Know" series. These guides provide valuable information on online platforms, age-appropriate content, and games.

This week's focus is on identifying and managing age-inappropriate content.

Sport Report

Soccer

On Friday, our boys and girls soccer teams faced off against the West at Gately Oval. Both our teams were faced with tough games against strong competition, with illness taking out our hopes of extra players. Both of our teams however played incredibly well and persevered till the end. Our boys were held off with a strong defence and the wind was against them going down 4-0. Our girls were evenly matched and played incredibly well, but still went down 3-2! All of our players should be commended on their resilience, commitment and sportsmanship!
